American feat in a World Cup

In the 1950 World Cup in Brazil there were a couple of curious stories: the first and most remembered was the ‘Maracanazo’, where Uruguay defeated the powerful Brazilian team to win its second World Cup.

The second was in a game where the United States beat England 1-0, a team that was the favorite to keep the cup. England agreed to play a World Cup for the first time and traveled with its great figures, including, Alf Ramsey and Stanley Matthews. Until then, the inventors of futbol had only officially competed with Scotland, Wales and Ireland for the British tournament, and amicably against other countries.

At a disadvantage, the English threw thousands of centers into the rival area, but all were rejected by the solid American defense. The minutes passed, until one of the great surprises in the history of world futbol.

At the end of the game, Italian referee Datthyllo told a journalist that “if I had not refereed it myself, I would never have believed it.” The 0-1 received through the Reuters news agency surprised British newspapers: many asked for confirmation of the result, but others, rushed by the closure and the time difference, thought it was a typographical error (something quite usual at that time) and they proudly titled “England 10-United States 1”. This ‘American miracle’ that went unnoticed in England left a deep wound that took a long time to heal.
